Nice facilitates justice delivery in Mchinji

National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has facilitated the release on bail and the trial of suspects in Mchinji District under its Chilungamo Programme.

The European Union-funded Chilungamo Programe seeks to speed up justice delivery through camp courts, especially for vulnerable groups in the country.

Yesterday, Nice Trust facilitated a camp court at Mchinji Police Station where law-enforcers and paralegal officers screened cases of remanded suspects.

At the end of the exercise, three suspects accused of human trafficking were given bail while others were found with no cases to answer.

In an interview, Mchinji Nice district civic education officer Emmanuel Banda said they wanted to promote rule of law by speeding up trials.

“Nice is particularly concerned with the delays in delivery of justice. It is against this background that we initiated the programme to facilitate speedy delivery of justice for all suspects irrespective of their financial status,” he said.

Mchinji Police Station officer-in-charge Rhoda Manjolo hailed the camp court, saying it is an important avenue for ensuring speedy delivery of justice.

“The programme is also helping to decongest police cells,” she said.

James Yolamu, one of the residents, said poor people who cannot afford to hire lawyers end up staying longer in prison waiting for trial.

“I commend Nice for introducing the programme because it will bring justice to the poor,” he said.
